I have a Virtual CD Drive created in my Win 7 Pro x64 notebook. The Virtual CD Drive is listed in Device Manager as FvFx CDDVDFx+tech-200 SCSI CDROM device. It's drivers are listed as cdrom.sys and PxHelpa64.sysIf I uninstall it, it reappears after the next boot. I imagine it is a left over of some software which creates and/or manages Virtual CD Drives, of which I have installed a few over the last months, but all of them have been uninstalled and I currently don'thave any one of those programs installed. How can I remove it permanently? Thanks.

A virtual CD-ROM switching utility is a mode switching tool for controlling 'flip flop' (multiple device) gear. Several new USB devices (especially high-speed wireless equipment, there seems to be a from offering that feature) have their device drivers on board; when plugged in for the first time they act like a and start installing the device driver from there. After that (and on every consecutive plugging) this device driver switches the mode internally, the storage device vanishes (in most cases), and a new device (like a USB ) shows up.
The (WWAN) gear maker Option calls that feature 'ZeroCD (TM)'. With USB sniffing programs and it is possible to eavesdrop the communication of the MS Windows device driver, to isolate the or action that does the switching and to reproduce the same thing under the rule of Linux or the variants. The problem with most USB modems is they have two modes. In one mode they are a USB flash drive and in the other mode they are a modem. Dogeared 100 good wishes necklace. Typically they only ship with Windows device drivers, sometimes device drivers as well. In any case, they seemingly seldom, if ever, ship with Linux device drivers. What normally happens with Windows is the device starts up as a USB flash drive, the drivers are installed and then they are responsible for 'switching' the device in to modem mode so you can use it.
This 'switch' is done via some codes, specific to the device, which controlling software can pass as a command to switch from disk to modem mode. The virtual CD-ROM switching utility manages the switch of mode from disk to modem, the latter disconnects any mounted disk containing software we don't care about that won't work anyway and, crucially, creates a modem port/serial device (usually /dev/ttyUSB0) for the networkmanager. The approach of adding Virtual CD-ROM with software drivers on 3G or storage devices has two problems: it presumably raises the cost of the device, and it may ship outdated software or even viruses.
Most of the times, up-to-date drivers are anyway built into the operating systems (after all, on systems implementing the USB standard like GNU/Linux, any 3G device is a USB serial port, and any storage device is a. The new USB Option WWAN modem devices support a CD-ROM device, which holds the needed Windows device driver to use the WWAN modem. Therefore, the firmware of the WWAN modem announces during the USB enumeration process to work as a virtual CD-ROM device with its vendor name 'ZOPTION'. This device is now called ZERO-CD. Ozerocdoff is a solution to switch off the ZERO-CD and allow the modem to be a used as a modem. USBModeSwitch USBModeSwitch is a virtual CD-ROM switching utility. I can find an unused drive letter, so that's not the problem. I feel like there is some API that would let me add a new 'CD/DVD class device' so that Windows would get notified and look at it as a CD device in explorer and all. At creation time, I would point my special kernel mode driver to be used with this device, and the kernel mode driver then fakes all CD access. Can any of you please point me in the right direction to create the device, or to publish its existance to Windows somehow. Thanks in advance!-Ganesh.

I have tested a variety of virtual device creator programs in the past. Programs like, or are just some of the applications that I have reviewed. One of the problems that I encountered was the fact that virtual CD or DVD drives remained available on the system after uninstallation of the software that added them to the system. While that is more of an aesthetic issue it is still something that could be problematic, for instance when trying to access media inserted into a drive (finding the right drive).I never really bothered to look into the issue. Today's article on addressed the issue which made me address it here on Ghacks as well.It is not possible to quickly distinguish physical and virtual optical drives in Windows Explorer, unless you have renamed drives to reflect that or by digging deeper into the configuration settings. Uninstalling Virtual DrivesHere is how you remove virtual drives under Windows so that those drives do not longer appear under My Computer, Windows Explorer or other software that makes use of optical drives.Open the Device Manager with Windows-p and the selection Device Manager from the sidebar menu.

A drive displaying SCSI for instance can be an indicator that it is a virtual drive, especially if your computer does not support that technology.Right-click on the virtual drive and select either Disable or Uninstall from the menu. Disable will keep the device listed in the device manager but not on the system. Uninstallation on the other hand removes the driver from the system and thus the drive.I suggest to disable drives if you are not sure if they are virtual or physical drives. Put a CD or DVD into your physical drive for identification purposes. Now disable the suspected virtual drive.
